Hiring A Political Consultant

Before You Hire A Consultant

Great consultants bring more than a winning strategy to the table. They need to support it with a winning mindset.

Be clear on your expectations and have them written down. Ask for references and their win record, especially races they have run similar to yours and runoff elections. Be clear on everything: background checks on their team, how they will be paid (there should be no retainer fee), availability, and most importantly, why they believe in your candidacy.

Your consultant's experience should be laid bare. They should be able to present a preliminary framework for your campaign strategy to ensure you can trust their experience and advisement. Have all agreements reviewed by an attorney.

Types of Consultants

A consultant advances the electoral goals of their client. To develop a strategy for the election campaign, they take on the role of political strategists. They could plan meetings to promote the candidate or the cause, organize the campaign team, or act as a public relations advisor.

However, it's important to note that different consultants have different areas of expertise. While it may be sufficient to hire a general consultant, several areas of specialty include fundraising, media specialists, GOTV efforts, digital marketing specialists and more.
