Incorporate Your Campaign

Incorporate Your Campaign

When it's time to make it official, do everything you can to keep your campaign's message legitimate.

Incorporating your campaign meansĀ converting your sole proprietorship or general partnership as the candidate into a firm formally recognized by the state's incorporation rules. Your campaign committee establishes a separate legal organization to do business through incorporation. This gives an extra degree of security for you, your family, your assets, and so on.

Local candidates may be tempted to forego this part of the process to sidestep tax complications, but don't fall into the same trap. Running a campaign, in many ways, is like starting an independent business.

Protecting Your Candidacy

It's important to keep in mind that the campaign owns any funds raised or spent by any of the aforementioned committees, including any loans provided by candidates. Under no circumstances may money raised for civic objectives be allocatedĀ for personal use. Additionally, if your campaign is incorporated, all liabilities would be the responsibility of the campaign rather than the candidate directly.
