Qualifying As A Candidate

Qualifying As A Candidate

Before you start strategizing, start your candidacy off on the right foot.

In Georgia, you must "qualify" as a political candidate in order to be included on the ballot. To do so, you must have a valid government-issued photo ID, the qualifying fee, and a notarized Affidavit of Candidacy on hand. Depending on the political office sought, these items must be delivered to and submitted to the State Political Party, the Secretary of State, and/or the local elections authority.

You are legally considered a political candidate in Georgia when you have taken necessary action to qualify for nomination for election, or election or have received any contributions or made any expenditures in pursuit of such nomination or election. If you need information regarding additional requirements for qualifying as an independent or political body candidate, please contact the Secretary of State Elections Division at 404-656-2871 or your local Elections Supervisor.
