Apply For An Employer Identification Number

Your employer identification number represents protection for both you and your campaign staff.

For tax filing and reporting reasons, an EIN, also known as a federal tax identification number, formally identifies a corporation, partnership, political committee, and other entities. To open a bank account, you must have an EIN. Fill out an electronic application (linked below) and send it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Make sure you select "Political Organization" when asked what type of organization you are. For further information, see the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board of Minnesota's handbook.

Official Tax Exemption

Immediately after securing the campaign's EIN, the organization must complete a Political Organization Notice. An organization is not tax-exempt until IRS Form 8871 is submitted, which must be done within 24 hours of the group's founding. Online, you can request an Internet EIN that you can use right now to submit Form 8871.
