Black Men In Office

The Political Power Landscape: Black Men In Office

The Relevance of the Black Male Campaign

On January 6, 2021 Reverend Raphael Warnock became the first African American senator in Georgia’s history.

While not as widely celebrated as our first black president or vice president, this represents a very relevant change in black men’s ability to campaign for offices in Georgia, regardless of party affiliation (it’s of equal significance that Warnock’s Republican opponent was also a black male).

But there is still a great amount of work to do when it comes to representation in politics, especially on the state level. Black men in civic leadership positions have represented significant changes in public policy throughout history. Today they represent interest several critical issues, such as mass incarceration, economic equity and police brutality.

Changing the Narrative

Though 2022 saw a race between two black male candidates for the Georgia senate, civic analysts, researchers and Black male leaders say politicians are failing to reach some black men with messaging that resonates with them and visibility in their communities. Ready to Lead seeks to enlist the help of aspiring black leaders who can stay hand-in-hand with the communities that they represent. Winning the vote is a small part of the battle. Marginalized communities must feel heard after the election cycle ends, and the real work begins.

Carrying Historic Voices

The history of black men in politics is still relevant to this day. Black men have often been the most outspoken, active and historically significant critics of disparity in both the American south and the country at large, and are therefore closely associated with some of the most pivotal civic changes. The importance of keeping black men in office is carrying forth the progress made by grassroots organizers in rooms where critical decisions are being made about the future of the people.
